Mariner Jack – Facial Hair the Cornish Way
With Movember in full swing and Christmas just around the corner, this seems the ideal time to talk about Mariner Jack grooming products. Placed unapologetically in the more hirsute and follically fulsome beard and moustache market, Mariner Jack is here to support your facial growth. The product range includes oils, soaps, balms, waxes and accessories to keep your beard and moustache clean, the skin underneath healthy and toned, and your presentation dapper and stylish.
Mariner Jack Makes Scents
The first thing that strikes us as surprisingly good is the nasally stimulating choice of classic and modern scents in the range. Ingredients such as Bay Rum, Sandalwood and Frankincense keep the more traditional fragrance alive, with more modern scents coming from spearmint, peppermint, citrus fruits, vanilla and cinnamon leaf. Jack and Mrs Jack have also been kind enough to take those with ultra-sensitive skin into account with fragrance-free choices as well.
It’s a natural thing for Mariner Jack.
Mariner Jack came into being when Mr Jack was trying to find natural, good quality beard and moustache products for his own bountiful bristles. Frustrated by the choice available, Mr Jack starting researching how to make his own products from naturally sourced ingredients. After sharing his new concoctions with a few friends it became clear he was on to something and so the Mariner Jack brand was born.
It’s a Cornish Thing, but not just a Cornish Thing
Mariner Jack is a 100% Cornish brand, based in the county’s capital city of Truro. The products can be found in a number of outlets through the county, including Truro’s Steam Barber Shop and Scentstore. It’s hard to keep a good thing quiet, though, and the Mariner Jack range can now be found throughout the UK, as well as on the Mariner Jack Website.
We were fortunate enough to get a choice of three oils in the post. The Tortuga, Cargo and Anchor scented oils are a delight to use, not only for the texture of the oil, but also for the innovative blending of fragrances. With only a drop or two we were able to condition our facial hair, and the skin underneath easily and sparingly. The oil is light and easy to apply and a pleasure to use and a little really does go a very long way. Within only a couple of days the difference is noticeable, with the facial hair being softer, and any skin irritiation reduced to nothing.
The Cargo scent blends the classic sandalwood fragrance with a hint of bergamot, another classic scent. The aroma is very pleasing, and tips a hat to the traditional scents of British grooming products.
The Anchor scent brings an air of eastern promise and mystery with frankinsence, black pepper and ylang. Clearly influenced by the former trading routes to the middle east, and the silk road, this scent is exotic and inspired.
Finally, our favourite scent, the Tortuga scent, with it’s Bay Rum and Lemon, smacks of the Caribbean, the freedom of the pirate life, and the joy of the high seas. If we had to choose, we’d say this was the Mariner Jack signature scent, appealing to seadogs, scallywags and scurvy knaves alike.
If this wasn’t enough, a chance meeting with some bushy bearded fellows in Truro’s Steam Barber Shop backed up our opinion, with both the hirsuit fellow’s extolling the virutes of the Mariner Jack range and claiming there is no finer product on the market.
Thinking Outside the Box
We were so impressed by the oils in our samples, that we gave them a try as a pre-shave oil. Shaving, for us, is about enjoying the experience, and in taking a little pleasure in our grooming. A good part of this is the scents used and the feel of the products on the faces sensitive skin. Mariner Jacks oils had already proved excellent at conditioning and keeping the skin moisturised, so it seemed a logical step. To our absolute joy, the Mariner Jack oils worked just fine as a pre-shave oil, providing a smooth glide for the razor, and protecting the skin during the shave. It should come as no surprise that this is the case, given the excellent quality of the oils used in the manufacture of their products.
We have also been assured that the beard soap doubles readily as a shaving soap.
Mariner Jack not only stocks oils, soaps, waxes and balms but also have a healthy, diverse and intriguing range of accessories and branded products. Whether you are after a comb, brush, shavette, ukelele or ear-plugs, it’s worth having a nose at the Mariner Jack range. With the stylish branding translating very well to all sorts of products, there are some excellent gift ideas and gift packs available for Christmas and throughout they coming year.
Our Opinion of Mariner Jack Products
We are huge fans of the Mariner Jack product range and, based on our experience, are delighted to recommend the brand. The prices are very reasonable, and the products are very luxurious and include ecologically considerate packaging and cleverly eye-catching branding. The real selling point for us though is that these luxury quality are handmade in Cornwall using natural products and packaged with a keen awareness of the environment.
